In the late 1800s, Sultan Abu Bakar met Ng Yat Giau, a graceful and intelligent Chinese woman, during a visit to China. He later married her, and in 1886 she was crowned Sultanah Fatimah, the only Chinese queen consort in Johor’s history.

In the late 1800s, Sultan Abu Bakar met Ng Yat Giau, a graceful and intelligent Chinese woman, during a visit to China. He later married her, and in 1886 she was crowned Sultanah Fatimah, the only Chinese queen consort in Johor’s history.
Her brother, Ng Yaw Foo, played a major role in Muar’s development—building roads, palaces, and iconic buildings with the Sultan’s trust. In 1887, the royal couple visited Muar and held a symbolic groundbreaking. To honor her, the Sultan declared Muar the City of the Fragrant Concubine.

DAY 5: MUAR – SEKINCHAN – KUALA SELANGOR
The first light of the day gently streams through the windows as we leave Kuala Lumpur and head towards Sekinchan, a hidden gem in Malaysia’s countryside. The journey takes about 2 hours, and along the way, you’ll enjoy the scenic views of Malaysia’s lush landscapes — golden rice fields shimmering under the sun, creating a peaceful escape.
Upon arrival in Sekinchan, you’re immediately captivated by the vast rice fields that stretch as far as the eye can see. During the harvest season, the rice fields turn a brilliant gold, and flocks of white herons soar above, painting a living picture in the sky. You can’t help but stop to take in the beauty and tranquility that surrounds you.
Here, there are several unique spots waiting for you to explore:
- Rice Factory – Witness firsthand the entire rice production process, from the fields to the table, and immerse yourself in the agricultural charm.
- Redang Beach – A peaceful coastal area perfect for an afternoon walk, feeling the sea breeze on your face and relaxing.
- Wishing Tree – A quaint spot where locals hang colorful wish papers for good fortune. Standing under the tree, it feels as if the whole world is rooting for your wishes.
Tram rides up Bukit Melawati: Historical hilltop fortress that once stood as a defensive stronghold against Dutch invasion. As the tram slowly ascends, you’ll feel a refreshing breeze while catching glimpses of the scenic coastline and lush greenery below.

Next, you’ll board a boat and set off into the Kuala Selangor River, where the true spectacle begins. As the boat slows down, the tour guide scatters food into the water. Within moments, dozens of majestic Brahminy Kites (red-backed sea eagles) and White-Bellied Sea Eagles appear, circling the sky before swooping down with incredible precision to snatch their meal from the water.
Watching these powerful birds of prey in action—wings spread wide, talons sharp, eyes focused—is truly a breathtaking sight. The experience is both thrilling and humbling, as you witness nature’s hunters up close in their natural habitat.
Fireflies & Blue Tears – A Magical Night on the Water
As the sky transitions from golden hues to a deep navy blue, the boat slowly glides through the mangrove forest, and suddenly, tiny flickering lights begin to appear. At first, just a few… then hundreds, thousands—the trees lining the riverbank come alive with the twinkling glow of fireflies, mirroring the starry sky above.
It feels like stepping into a fairy tale, where nature herself has adorned the night with countless tiny lanterns. The fireflies blink in perfect rhythm, creating a mesmerizing light show that leaves everyone in silent awe.
But the wonders of the night are far from over. As the boat moves into darker waters, another astonishing natural phenomenon reveals itself—Blue Tears. This rare bioluminescent glow, caused by microscopic marine organisms, makes the water shimmer with an eerie, ethereal blue light. When you dip your hands into the water or gently splash it, the ripples illuminate, leaving glowing trails behind.

After a hearty breakfast, today’s adventure takes us through Malaysia’s history, royalty, and iconic landmarks!
Istana Negara: The official residence of the King of Malaysia. While entry to the palace is restricted, we can admire its majestic golden domes, grand gates, and beautifully landscaped gardens from the outside. If we’re lucky, we might even catch the Changing of the Guard ceremony!
Batu Caves: A majestic limestone hill home to a series of caves and temples. Climb the 272 rainbow-colored steps to reach the main cave, where you’ll be greeted by stunning Hindu shrines and the towering golden statue of Lord Murugan. Keep an eye out for the playful monkeys along the way—but hold onto your snacks!
Dataran Merdeka: The historic square where Malaysia’s freedom from British rule was declared in 1957. Surrounded by colonial-era buildings, such as the stunning Sultan Abdul Samad Building, this iconic spot is perfect for history lovers and photographers alike.
